UPPER MARLBORO — A former special education teacher and head football coach has been indicted by a grand jury on one count of the sex abuse of a minor.
Andre Leonard Brown, who worked at High Point High School in Beltsville since February 2002, was arrested last month after a 10th grader told officials she and Brown had sex during homecoming weekend in Sept. 2013.
The student was 17 at the time of the encounter, below the state’s legal age of consent. Brown was 32 years old at the time.
When interviewed by authorities, Brown admitted to the sexual relationship, which he said took place on school property in the boys’ football locker room, according to charging documents.
His bail was set at $75,000, but he is out on bond.
He has also been put on administrative leave from the school, which is protocol for the school system, according to Prince George’s County Public Schools spokesman Max Pugh.
PGCPS denied a Maryland Public Information Act request for how many times Brown has previously been put on administrative leave, citing personnel reasons.
Brown has previously been charged with driving on a suspended license prior to his May arrest.
Brown played football at High Point High School and graduated from the school in the late 1990s. He coached the football team last fall to a 2-8 record.
Brown is due in Prince George’s County Circuit Court for an arraignment July 3, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office.
