UPPER MARLBORO – Frederick Douglass High School swept Crossland High School on Sept. 27, leading for nearly the entirety of the three games in front of a large home crowd.
The Lady Eagles (bottom left) got off to a fast start in game one, ripping off a 10-0 run to begin the match. Antoinette Hall had five aces during that stretch, including two after a Crossland timeout attempted to slow the momentum.
The Lady Cavaliers would get within five but no closer and Jordan Day closed the 25-14 victory with a vicious ace.
Crossland showed its first signs of life in the second game, jumping out to a quick lead on the strength of Tiana Johnson’s serves.
Johnson and Jordyn White were the only Cavaliers to notch multiple aces in the match. Douglass clawed back after a massive spike by Chelsie Day followed by a few sizzling serves from her, igniting a 9-0 run to put the game away, eventually ending with an identical 25-14 score.
The Cavaliers actually had a chance to stifle this run after a nice tip by its front line, but Hall and Chelsie Day both dove for a miraculous dig and a teammate flipped the ball back over the net as the Lady Cavaliers had vacated their positions to begin a celebration.
Game three was more of the same, an early lead by Douglass that they maintained for the duration of the contest.
Chelsie Day scored four quick points to extend the margin and may have closed out the game herself if it weren’t for the net, which seemed to be the only impediment to her serve.
Dorian Valentine finished the third game with an ace after Jordan Day (top right) had done it the two prior games. Day matched Hall for the team lead with five aces.
The win was the Lady Eagles’ third straight after starting the season losing two of three.
