BOWIE – With a new manager and revamped roster, the Bowie Baysox looked to give their home crowd an exciting brand of baseball to start the 2019 season.
However, their opening day game on April 11 against the Harrisburg Senators was a different story as three pitchers combined for six strikeouts to earn a no-hitter, the first one from an away team in Prince George’s Stadium since 2003. The Senators knocked off the Baysox 2-0 in front of 3,488 spectators.
Starter Erick Fedde, reliever Jordan Mills and closer Aaron Barrett only allowed four Bowie batters on base after walking two, an outfield error and hitting a player with a pitch in their no-hitting performance.
After a seven-game road trip to start their season, the Baysox (2-5) arrived home looking for their third victory in four games.
However, on the first pitch of the game by right-hander Marcos Molina (top left), Harrisburg’s Luis Garcia smacked a single towards left field. The Senators (7-1) would load the bases with an extra-base hit and a fielding error to drive in their first run on a Drew Ward sacrifice fly to take the early lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, Senators’ Rhett Wiseman fired off a center field single past Molina to drive in their second run. Bowie had a chance to end their hitless streak in the fifth inning when Cael Brockmeyer, who was earlier hit by a pitch during his at-bat, stole second base and moved to scoring position after a flyout. However, the Baysox left him stranded after flying out the inning.
It looked like Bowie would finally get its first hit in the bottom of the eighth inning when Ademar Rifaela popped a booming hit towards right-center field. However, Harrisburg’s Zach Collier made a sliding catch on the warning track to keep the no-hitter going.
Right-handed hitter Yusniel Díaz, who was a part of the Manny Machado trade from last season, was Bowie’s last chance to end the hitless streak in the bottom of the ninth but hit a routine groundout to end the game with the loss.
The Harrisburg dugout rushed the mount to celebrate the achievement after earning the final out.
