LARGO – Potomac High School quarterback Dominique Anthony threw for more than 200 yards to go with five passing touchdowns leading the Wolverines to a comfortable 53-24 road win over Largo High School on Sept. 20.
The Wolverines built a 20-0 lead in the first quarter and maintained at least a three-touchdown advantage for most of the night. Anthony, an Old Dominion commit, threw a 25-yard touchdown pass with one minute remaining in the period to build the large deficit.
Largo (0-3) quickly responded with junior quarterback Xavier Williams launching a 65-yard pass to senior wide receiver Tavon Simms for the Lions’ first touchdown. Anthony then fired a 39-yard touchdown pass for the Wolverines.
Before halftime, Largo’s special teams helped with a 50-yard punt return touchdown but missed the 2-point conversion.
However, thanks to a big kickoff return, Anthony converted a 10-yard pass play to wide receiver Corey Dyches to give the Wolverines a 33-12 lead. Dyches finished with five receptions with 125 yards and three touchdowns.
Largo made two big plays to start the second half, starting with the Lions returning the opening kickoff for a 50-yard touchdown. In Potomac’s first offensive position, the Largo defense intercepted Anthony’s pass as the third quarter began to wind down.
However, the Wolverines stopped their momentum as Largo was forced to turn the ball over on downs.
Sophomore Dadrian Carter-Williams broke free for a 44-yard touchdown run while Anthony connected with senior wide receiver Anthony James for the 2-point conversion to extend their lead by 23 points.
The Potomac quarterback scored his second touchdown of the quarter when he found Dyches for a 3-yard passing score.
Anthony finished 12 of 26 for 208 yards and threw five touchdowns, increasing his season total to 13, according to Potomac Coach Ronnie Crump.
The Lions added one more touchdown in the fourth quarter when Williams threw his second touchdown pass of the game. Potomac’s defense limited Largo’s offensive capabilities by sacking Williams five times and collecting two interceptions.
Potomac will host Surrattsville High School for its Homecoming game on Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. while Largo will travel to Fairmont Heights High School on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
